Urania - Demo (2010)

This demo was brought to me by Nicodamien of the Hungarian Stoner blog stoner.blog.hu. Thank you for that, Nicodamien!
Urania is a Stoner/Space Rock band from Hungary. I can't say much about this band, because there is nothing to find about them, no website, no MySpace or whatever. The only thing about Urania is here. What I can say about this demo is that it is an excellent piece of work. This demo contains eight tracks and they're simply are named I till VIII. These tracks are a display of superb Instrumental Stoner/Space Rock that is performed by Urania. This demo is definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!

To demo podrzucił mi Nicodamien z węgierskiego bloga. Nicodamien, dziękuję!

Urania jest space-stonerowym zespołem z Węgier. Nie mogę o nich zbyt dużo powiedzieć ponieważ ciężko jest znaleźć cokolwiek. Nie mają strony internetowej, MySpace’a ani czegokolwiek w tym stylu. Trzeba przyznać, iż ich demo to kawał świetnej roboty. Zawiera osiem utworów zatytułowanych cyframi od I do VII. Te tracki są świetnymi stonerowo-spacerockowymi instrumentalami. Zdecydowanie zasługują na przesłuchanie. Polecamy!

The Cult of Dom Keller (EP1)

Napisałbym, że to mieszanka dusznego, kabalistycznego grania, ale nie o rejony azji zachodniej tu chodzi. A może właśnie tak, tylko nie do końca jestem tego świadom. Przede mną dosłownie i w przenośni „the cult of dom keller” - eksperyment muzyczny z wielkiej brytanii. Od razu napiszę, że każdy kawałek tego albumu rozpoczyna zabójczy wstęp i nie ukrywam, że to zachęca do zanurzenia się w ten projekt coraz dalej… i dalej. Do tego stopnia, że gdy w winampie po spindrift (słuchałem songs from a ancient age z 2007 roku) rozpoczęły się dźwięki otwierającego płytę intro for the sun, pomyślałem, że muzyka przybrała wreszcie taką formę jakiej czekałem od dłuższego czasu. Zupełnie wyleciało mi z głowy, że tuż po wspomnianym spindrift, chyba bezwarunkowo, dodałem do playlisty „the cult of dom keller”. Już w pierwszym utworze słychać wokalne echolalie - mroczne pozdrowienia wyrzucane bardziej do księżyca niż do słońca (na co wskazywałby tytuł). Wszystko to nieśpieszne, podbijane przez jeden gitarowy akord, zdradzający symptom muzycznego nawiedzenia.
W tym miejscu powinienem napisać coś w tym stylu, że im dalej słucham tych dźwięków tym ciekawiej się robi. Po trosze będzie to prawdą, bo każdy kolejny ton jest łapczywie wychwytywany przez moje ucho, chociaż nie zaciera on wrażenia tego co było przed chwilą. Wszystko toczy się niby w podobnym klimacie, choć cały czas jest nieco inaczej. W goat skin dream następuje ciekawa zmiana nastroju, stworzona przez wyizolowany od świata kabaret, którego słucha garstka osób. Wokalista po zażyciu sporej ilości psychodelicji, gdzieś tak od połowy utworu, potrafi już tylko iść po śladach świdrującej gitary. Pod stopami ma piasek i wijące się węże. mam wrażenie, że ta mroczna groteska rozgrywa się w kościele. Albo jest to misterium na przystanku autobusowym w środku kukurydzianego pola. W ogóle płyta ta ma coś z rockowego szabasu. Świetny doomfoot – marszowy, trochę za krótki. Genialne wejście w into the sky volcano, muliste harmonie; jakby przesterowany sitar i na to nałożony brudny dźwięk garażowej gitary. Jakieś tonalne i wokalne wygibasy. A to zaledwie wstęp do ostatniego na płycie beyond burning skies. Po raz drugi mam niewyraźne skojarzenia z pewną surfową kapelą, której nazwa tu nie padnie… po pierwsze dlatego, że to tylko pojedyncze motywy, po drugie „the cult…” ciągnie bardziej w rejony psychodeliczne. Na koniec zostawiłem czwarty w kolejności godshaker. Jest głośniejszy, nieco drapieżniejszy i dłuższy od pozostałych utworów. Przede wszystkim jest pozbawiony partii wokalnych. nic poza bębny, shoegazowe gitary i gdzieniegdzie klawisze (czy dobrze nadstawiam słuch?). Dynamika prowadzi do przyjemnych konwulsji – ten utwór komasuje trans z całej płyty, ukazując najbardziej rockowy pazur zespołu… tak minęło mi blisko 20 min. Z ep 1 tego kwartetu. wszystkie pozytywne wrażenia powyżej. Minusy – długość trwania materiału, aż się prosi, by utwory trwające nieco powyżej minuty (jest ich trzy) zostały rozwinięte jako pełnowymiarowe kompozycje. Jeżeli czegoś im brakuje, to właśnie odpowiedniej do podtrzymania nastroju długości.

Here’s in front of me, literally and figuratively “Cult of Dom Keller” – experimental music from this new band from Great Britain. I get a feeling from much of this music, a feeling of Asiatic influences throughout the EP’s songs. First of all, I will write that each track of this EP has a killer opening and I will not hide, it makes me want to dip in this project deeper…and deeper, to a great extent. After I played Spindrift in my Winamp player (I was listening to their songs released way back in 2007!), the sounds of first track on the EP are “Intro for the Sun”. I thought, now, THIS is music I have been waiting for, for a long time! I had completely forgotten that I added to my playlist “Cult of Dom Keller”, so I was surprised at the amazing difference in sounds from Spindrift’s sound. In the first song you can hear vocal echoes – dark greetings thrown more to the moon than to the sun (as the title hints). Everything is deliberately boosted by one guitar, a sound that gets bigger and bigger on that guitar. At this point, the song gets even more interesting. My ears are completely enthralled. All the sounds I hear are similar, yet I can detect differences that make the songs intriguing. Goat Skin Dream is followed by an interesting change of atmosphere, so different from what the masses are used to listening to. This music is special: it’s different, tribal, intriguing. The vocalist sounds like he’s taking some incredible trip on psychedelics. Under his feet he’s got sand and writhing snakes. The guitar sounds make me think I’m in the trip with him! I see visions, and I have feelings from The Cult of Dom Keller’s music, that this dark, grotesque trip took place in a church or at some mysterious bus station in the middle of a cornfield! I love this trip! This EP has a bit of harder rock, too, like what Black Sabbath might play. Doomfoot has a marching rock beat, but ends too quickly. Into the Sky erupts like a volcano, then uses muddy harmonics, something like a sitar in overdrive paired with the dirty sound of garage guitar. Beyond Burning Skies is a huge psychedelic trip towards the end of the EP. Godshaker, is louder, grasping a hold of me, and longer than the other songs. No vocals, just tribal drums, shoegaze guitars, and some keyboards accents, I think, if I hear correctly! This track connects all the other songs, and keeps the trance going, and I am surprised the 20 minutes of the EP are over! All positive impressions I get from this music is above. Weaknesses: the length of the songs could be longer, with their grand psychedelic aspirations. Maybe the band can further develop their short songs as a full-size compositions for an album. If anything is missing, it is just right length of the songs to keep up the mood.

The Graveyard: Memphis Graham

Memphis Graham was a band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Five guys, extremely talented, got together for a short time a few years ago and decided to make an album. They chose the fantastic name Memphis Graham, recorded an eleven-song album, played some gigs around town, and not long after their inception, they split. A buddy of mine, a musician himself from Chicago, had told me about Memphis Graham, got me their music back in mid 2009, and kept me updated on what they were doing. Unfortunately, those updates stopped pretty quickly, as the band called it quits so the young men could concentrate on other things, like University. Oh well, at least they left us with this ONE great album, which takes major influences from The Brian Jonestown Massacre's signature sound of jangly psychedelic guitar rock, shaking tambourines, and retro vocal stylings.

Memphis Graham był zespołem pochodzącym z Chicaco, Ilinois, USA. Pięciu niezwykle utalentowanych gości parę lat temu zebrało się na krótko i postanowili nagrać album. Wybrali fantastyczną nazwę: Mephis Graham. Zarejestrowali 11 utworów, pograli trochę koncertów w mieście i niedługo po powstaniu zespół się rozpadł. Mój kumpel, muzyk z Chicago, powiedział mi o Memphis Graham, dał ich muzykę jakoś w 2009 i informował mnie co się u nich dzieje. Niestety te informacje skończyły się dosyć szybko, kapela ogłosiła koniec działalności, bo chłopaki chcieli się skupić na innych rzeczach, takich jak studia. Przynajmniej zostawili jeden świetny album inspirowany The Brian Jonestown Massacre, rockowopsychodelicznymi gitarami, tamburynem, wokalami w stylu retro.

Pobierzcie album tutaj i dajcie nam znać co o nim myślicie!

Manthra Dei - Manthra Dei EP (2010)

This outstanding piece of work that was send to me by Brano of the band Manthra Dei. Thank you for that, Brano!
Manthra Dei is an Instrumental Psychedelic trio from Brescia, Italy and this is their same titled debut EP. This EP contains two awesome tracks that both are around 18 minutes long. The guys of Manthra Dei are very good musicians. The guitar player is so damn good! And his playing is well complemented by the drummer and bassist. This band is very good with letting you get carried away with their music. This is the kind of music that I want to hear in a live performance! This EP brings me in a state of trance and in a state of euphoria! One funny thing: The start of the second track sounds a lot of Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix. Enjoy!

Dziękuje Brano!
Manthra Dei to instrumentalno psychodeliczne trio z Bresci, Włochy i to jest ich debiutancka epka. Zawiera ona 2 świetne utwory, które trwają ok. 18min. Goście z Mantra Dei są bardzo dobrymi muzykami. Gitarzysta jest rewelacyjny! Jego gra jest dobrze uzupełniana przez perkusistę i basistę. Ta kapela znakomicie daje się ponieść swojej muzyce. To jest właśnie ten rodzaj gędźby ,który chciałbym usłyszeć na żywo. Epka kojarzy mi się ze stanem transu i euforii. Jedna zabawna rzecz: Początek drugiego utworu brzmi jak „Machne Gun” Jimiego Hendrixa. Enjoy:P

The Graveyard: The Clean Prophets

This is the first post in what will be a recurring series for PSoC blog, an idea Maciej and I came up with while discussing how so many bands we love called it quits after just one amazing album. We named the series The Graveyard, for obvious reasons: the bands are now DEAD, but their memory lives on in the ONE album they gave to us music fans to enjoy forever. The Clean Prophets is the first band I want to spotlight in The Graveyard.
The Clean Prophets was a three-piece band based in Los Angeles, California, USA, earlier this decade. The three members, Jerrold Balcom, Johnny Sleeper, and Giorgio Karambelas, all came from previous bands of the psychedelic genre of music, namely The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and The Superbees. They took their name from a song by The La's, beloved Brit-pop band by many, and recorded and self-released an 11 song album titled Praise Is Poison in 2007. Praise Is Poison does not sound at all like the previous bands the guys were in; instead it has its own gentle psych pop vibe to it, all the songs are mid-tempo, guitar-heavy tunes with lyrics that are far from boring and cliched. To jest pierwszy post który będzie wprowadzeniem do powtarzającej się serii dla PSoC bloga. Na pomysł wpadł Maciej i Ja podczas naszej dyskusji na temat tego jak wiele kapel które uwielbiamy kończy swoją karierę po nagraniu zaledwie jednego albumu. Nazwaliśmy tę serie The Graveyard (Cmentarzysko) z oczywistych powodów: Zespoły te już są MARTWE - rozpadły się, ale pamięć o nich żyje dalej w albumie, który dał nam, fanom muzyki możliwość czerpania przyjemności z nagrań an nim zawartych. The Clean Prophets jest pierwszym zespołem na który chciałam zwrócić uwagę w cyklu The Graveyard.
The Clean Prophets był 3-osobowym zespołem założonym w Los Angeles, na początku tej dekady. Trzech członków zespołu: Jerrold Balcom, Johnny Sleeper i Giorgio Karambelas należało wcześniej do innych kapel które grają muzykę psychodeliczną czyli: The Brian Jonestown Massacre i The Superbees. Trio zapożyczyło nazwę z piosenki The La's, uwielbianej przez wielu Brit-popowej kapeli i wydało własnym sumptem krążek składający się z 11 utworów który zatytułowany został "Praise Is Poison", materiał wydano w 2007r. Praise Is Poison nie brzmi tak jak zespoły w których grali wcześniej jego autorzy. W zamian oferuje nam swoje delikatne psych-popowe brzmienie. Wszystkie utwory są grane w średnim tempie,ciężkie brzmienie gitar oraz teksty są dalekie od nudy i banału. Utwory są chwytliwe i urocze. Zapraszam was do sprawdzenia tego albumu tutaj:

Psychedelic Sounds of Confusion Facebook

Sky Picnic

Jako, że ten blog jest poświęcony muzyce psychodelicznej, chyba nie muszę pisać co gra zespół Sky Picnic, prawda? Grupa pochodzi z Nowego Jorku, została założona przez Chrisa Shermana i Leah Cinnamon w 2007 roku. Do tej pory wydali kilka epkę Synesthesia i album Farther in this Fairy Tail, jednak, moim zdaniem, na uwagę zasługuje szczególnie ich długogrający debiut Farther in this Fairy Tail. Żeby być szczerym, na samym początku przyznam, że nie grają muzyki, której mogę słuchać na kolanach. Ich największym atutem jest co innego. Przyjemność. Przyjemność jaką czerpię słuchając tego zespołu. 9 utworów i 46 minut dźwięków kojących uszy słuchacza. Już rozpoczynające krążek Hide and Seek (moim zdaniem jeden z lepszych kawałków Sky Picnic) pokazuje czego będzie się można spodziewać. Nic tylko położyć się, zamknąć oczy i odpłynąć. Czasami człowiek potrzebuje takiego „odpoczynku” w towarzystwie muzyki (np. po przesłuchaniu epki Henryspenncer – patrz niżej). Drugim moim faworytem jest Universal Mind Decoder (moim zdaniem NAJLEPSZY numer Sky Picnic). Długi, bo ponad 12 minutowy utwór, totalnie psychodeliczny, totalnie niszczący, wspaniały. Wydaje mi się, że w wersji live musi urywać jaja. Reszta płyty też daje radę, ale te dwie kompozycje zdecydowanie się wyróżniają. Jakby nagrali cały album na poziomie Hide and Seek i Universal Mind Decoder wielbiłbym ich bezgranicznie, a tak mogę powiedzieć, że bardzo lubię. Sprawdźcie ich materiał. Cholernie warto, a dla moich asów nawet trzeba! POLECAM!
Jeszcze dodam że zespół jakoś w styczniu lub lutym wyda nową epke.

This blog is about psychedelic music so I don’t need to say what kind of music sky picnic plays, right? Band is from New York and was founded by Chris Sherman and Leah Cinnamon in 2007. Since then they have recorded an album and ep, however in my opinion, most attention is deserved by their full-length album Farther in this Fairy Tail. To be honest in the beginning it’s not music that I can listen on my feet. The biggest feeling is something else. Pleasure. Pleasure that I can take while I’m listening this band. 9 tracks and 46 minutes of calm, sooth sounds for ears. First track that opens album Hide and seek (in my opinion is the best track of Sky Picnic) shows what you can expect . Nothing to do but lie down, close your eyes and drift away. Sometimes people need to “rest” with music (eg, after hearing the ep Henryspenncer - see below). My second favorite is the Universal Mind Decoder (in my opinion the best! number Sky Picnic). Long, over a 12 minute track, totally psychedelic, totally devastating, wonderful. It seems to me that the live version has to tear off your balls. The rest of the album also can do the trick, but those two tracks definitely stand out. If they recorded whole album on level just like Hide and Seek and Universal Mind Decoder then I could say that I adore this band extremely but I will now say that I really like this band. You must check out their music. It is worth to check especially for my aces even you must! I highly recommend this band!

Henryspenncer - The Shelter Days

This little gem was already posted at my other place, Stoner Rock Is Here To Stay.
Henryspenncer is an one-man project by Valentin from France. This guy plays some great Atmospheric Psychedelic Doom with Metal and even Americana influences. (Valentin knows how to play slide guitar!) According to MySpace Henryspenncer is inspired by the following: Neil Young's Dead Man, Titan, Grails, Six Organs Of Admittance, Metallica, Across Tundras, Kyuss, Barn Owl, Headdress, The Black Angels and Earth.
The result is The Shelter Days, a free download EP that is truly great. It really has a creepy/sombre sphere. The music is some sort of indefinable, but it is awesome! You have to take my word for that. I guess you have to experience this EP for yourself. Enjoy these strange vibes! Valentin is working now on an album called To The Timeless Valley. It will be released soon!

Ten gość gra świetny atmosferyczny psychodeliczny doom z metalem i można w nim odnaleźć nawet wpływy z Americany. Musicie mi zaufać i doświadczyć sami tej epki. Valentin pracuje teraz nad nowym albumem The Timeless Valley który będzie wypuszczony już niedługo!

Pochodzą ze szkocji. Założeni przez braci Hughesów (obaj gitary i wokale) i Laurę O’brien (syntezatory i klawisze). Od razu napiszę, że ich muzyka przemyca coś z krajobrazu wysp. Debiutancką epkę wypełniają trzy długie i nieśpieszne kompozycje (dwie pierwsze trwają 17 min, a trzecia 5!) ta muzyka ciągnie się trochę jak droga, którą trzeba przebyć od domostwa do domostwa spacerując wrzosowymi łąkami. Wtedy to najlepszym sposobem na wypełnienie czasu jest snucie wyobrażeń. Wszystkie te dźwięki zdają się być bardzo swojskie, zasłyszane już gdzieś wcześniej a zarazem malowane własnymi barwami. Takie dziwne podwórko, które wtopiło się w krajobraz, mimo iż nad nim unoszą się skrzydlate koty. W the Point Between Heaven And Hell - pierwszym utworze na epce, w którym sam wstęp trwa blisko 5 minut, wyprawa z ziemskiej zamienia się w metafizyczną. Nie tylko za sprawą tekstu, ale przede wszystkim za sprawą instrumentarium. Przesterowane gitary zahaczają tu o delikatną psychodelię, a liryczny i zarazem melancholijny głos Gary’ego Hugheusa uzupełniają dziewczęce zaśpiewy laury O’brien. Warto dodać, że płeć żeńska to też partie skrzypiec i harmonijki. właśnie dociera do mnie, że ten spacer w chmurach wypełnia jakaś dziwna troska i specyficzne natężenie, które znika dopiero wraz z pierwszymi linijkami tekstu. Ulotność tego utworu sprawia, że 10 min. The Point Between… mija prawie niepostrzeżenie. Prawie, bo zostawia ciepłe, optymistyczne wrażenia.
W drugim utworze: Truth or Consequence moją uwagę zwraca śpiew i przede wszystkim śpiew. Kołyszący i folkowy. Nie brak tu także bardzo wyważonej, epickiej i emocjonalnej rockowej jazdy, dzięki pojawiającym się tu i ówdzie charakterystycznym, ślizgającym i wibrującym partiom gitar.
W Hiding in the Shadows miejsce basu zajmuje didgeridoo, albo gra tuż obok a gitary oddają pole sitarom. Wszystko do czasu, bo i tu jest miejsce na przestrzenne i wydłużone pociągnięcia pięciostrunowych instrumentów. Właśnie: przestrzenne, to dobre słowo, by określić zawartość Take The Ride. Przestrzenne sesje i rockowa psychodelia uzupełniana przez delikatny folk. Taka właśnie jest debiutancka epka tego zespołu. Zapętlam dźwięki Helicon w winampie. Dzisiaj i sądzę, że nie tylko dzisiaj szykuje się długi wieczór z tą muzyką…

They come from Scotland. A Band formed by the Hughes brothers (both guitar and vocal) and Laura O’Brien (synthesizer and keyboard). I must say that their music brings to your mind something about the UK landscape. Their debut EP consists of three long and slow compositions (the first two of them last for 17 minutes and the third one for 5 min.!). This music carries on like a road you have to walk between different homesteads, when wandering on heather meadows. Then the best way to kill time is to start dreaming. All the sounds seem familiar, like you’ve heard them before somewhere and at the same time they have a unique distinctive sound.
Our journey is transformed into a metaphysical one with the first piece on the EP called ‘the point between heaven and hell’, in which the intro itself lasts for 5 minutes. Not only because of the lyrics, but mostly thanks to the instrumental section. The guitars sound a little psychedelic and the melancholic vocal of Gary Hugheus is completed by girly Laura O’Brien’s singing. I’d like to add that the violin and the harmonica are also female parts. It occurs to me now that this walk in the clouds is filled with some sort of weird concern and specific tension, which both disappear with the moment when the lyrics start. ‘The point between…’goes by almost without a notice…almost, because it leaves you with a warm, optimistic feeling.
In the second piece ‘Truth or consequence’ the thing that drew my attention was the swinging, folky vocal. Thanks to the characteristic vibrating sound of slide guitar, it also doesn’t lack in epic, emotional rock ride. In ‘Hiding in the shadows’ the bass is replaced with didgeridoo or both instruments are played at the same time, and sitars take place of the guitars. Here, as well you’ll hear elongated spatial guitar sounds. Exactly, space is the word that came to my mind after hearing ‘Take the ride’. Spatial sessions and psychedelic rock completed by soft folk. That’s what Helicon’s debut EP’s like. I’m about to play Helicon right now, I guess I’m going to spend many long nights with their music.

The Frozen Borderline is a side-project formed by Nils O. - the vocalist of a German band The Blue Angel Lounge.

The Frozen Borderline have already released their debut album called 'Sadness as a Gift'. There are 11 pieces you can find on it, all of them kept in the same cold vibe as TBAL's 'The God' or 'Rising End'. During the first listen I had goose bumps all over my body. I experienced melancholic music, composed in a way that made it impossible for me to get enough of their sound for a long time. In my opinion the best pieces on 'Sadness as a Gift' are the hypnotizing 'As cold as the moon', depressing 'Return to timeless eyes', and 'Nothing belongs together', the last song on this amazing album. The whole album is filled with sadness, and the moving lyrics about loneliness, death and love, provoke reflection.

Whatever Hippie Bitch jest 5 osobowym zespołem pochodzącym z Francji, Bethune, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Grają muzykę psychodeliczną wymieszaną z przyjemnymi dla ucha shoegazowymi brzmieniami.
Po przesłuchaniu kilku utworów na myspace zauroczyłem się ich muzyką. Zespół gra niesamowicie klimatycznie. Wokalista śpiewa w j. francuskim co moim zdaniem idealnie pasuje do ich muzyki.
Delikatne psycho brzmienia z nutką tajemniczości, które wprowadzają w przyjemny transowy stan. Gitary grają potężnie i jednoczesnie leniwe. Moim zdaniem psychodeliczny rock w swietnym wydaniu!! O tym zespole wkrótce będzie głośno, ponieważ juz nagrali materiał na LP który czeka tylko na zmiksowanie i wydanie. Whatever Hippie Bitch is a five-member band coming from France, Bethune, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. They create a psychedelic music mixed with pleasant to the ear shoegazy sounds. After listening to some of their pieces on myspace I fell in love with their music. The band’s sound has an amazing vibe. The vocalist sings in their mother language, and in my opinion it fits the music perfectly. The delicate psycho sounds with a bit of mystery, which put you in a blissful trance state. The guitars play in a powerful and lazy way at the same time. In my opinion it’s a great piece of psychedelic rock!! We’ll hear about this group, I’m sure, since they’ve already recorded songs for the new LP, which only needs to be mixed and it’s ready to be released. What is your musical background and how did you guys get together to form Whatever Hippie Bitch ? And what style of music are you striving to create?

I don't want to stereotype our music, but I believe it is more a melding of different styles. Definitely French shoegaze or neo-psychedelia. it is constantly changing, depending on the mood, the inspiration of each, the state of our minds ... but if I have to catalog it, i will say it's all about open-mindedness.
we began music at the same time several years ago, and have always been on the same wavelength. we had the same influences, the same desire to share something different. 2 years ago, we decided to create an unpretentious band. seeing other bands, we said " why not us? ".

Maybe it’s a common question but why did you name the band “Whatever Hippie Bitch”?.I presume that The Brian Jonestown Massacre song inspired you? If yes….was it more like “Hey fucking cool name for a band” or “ Hey I like this song maybe we should name our band like this?” ? . I see that many psychedelic bands have names of TBJM songs.

you're right for the two reasons... at the beginning, it was because of we love that song, and then later, when we met some English bands and American bands, and said that's a pretty cool name, we realized that's fuckin' evil band name. BJM and Anton are our first influence, and it's a kind of respect for him, not copy-paste... We don't want to play his music, but ours. it's just a wink to his work...

I’ve seen on your myspace that you’re recording a new album. When are you planning to release it and why In Norway ?

Yes, we will travel to Norway, more exactly to MOLDE, during July... Don't know exactly when it will be available, maybe during autumn. It's the most important project for us. I think this could be the beginning of something. Why Norway? It's because this is a place of our label "trout as lubrications records". And that's where the best European band " RANCHO RELAXO " is living. It's important for us to create and share something with guys like them. They are a big influence for us, and to work with them is an opportunity that cannot be refused. It's an analog studio, lost in the woods, behind mountains and fjords.... what's better for mind inspiration?

How is the scene in France ? I am not too familiar with it, so maybe you can tell me a bit about what it's like being serious musicians there?

The French scene is always in a kind of evolution... there are a lot of quality bands here, like BlAAK HEAT SHUJAA, or COTTON CLUB. BUT, it's very closed, you know. That's why we sing in French, maybe... it's weird for french to singing french. for us it's normal, but not for everyone... what's cool here, is our kind of music is more and more respected everyday. And I think french bands can be more important (popular?) than they are now.

Have you always been involved in music? What are your inspirations?

Our inspiration is everything that keeps music evil! I find this expression very interesting because it summarizes a perpetual quest for creativity. Personally, the Iclandic scene and American scene are my biggest influences, like THE DEAD SKELETONS, BJM, ... this is not really everything that influences, but it's the biggest influnces. After those main influences, you have bands who we are playing with... Very very cool bands.

What kind of guitars/amps/other instruments do you guys use?

We don't have a lot of quality equipements, but we use hagstrom and washburn guitars, with marshall and orange amps. For the drumkit, a tama superstar with paiste cymbals.

Which cities or countries would you like to play in?

We want to travel europe man... maybe after the recording of our album. We played in France, England,.... but we want to go further and discover the world.

Powitajcie młody zespół z Wielkiej Brytanii!!!! Mowa o Daylight Frequencies (wczeniejsza nazwa zespołu The Red Mountain Espionage)! Pierwszy raz styczność z tą kapelą miałem jakieś 2 miesiące temu. Na starcie włączyłem utwor z ich epki Six In the chamber, byłem podekscytowany, po pierwszej minucie wiedziałem czego mogę się spodziewać! Brudnego, ciężkiego neo-psychodelicznego rocka. Six In the chamber to zdecydowanie mój faworyt, trance-owy, duszny klimat, który wwierca się w mózg! Kolejna pozycja, która mi się bardzo spodobała na Epce to Rustic Bones ze swoim klaustrofobicznymi dźwiękami, przytłaczającym wokalem i mrocznymi klawiszami w tle. Na epce znajdują się jeszcze Sure fit noose i Lions Den ale o nich nie będę pisał po prostu sprawdźcie sami!! Od tej epki nie jestem w stanie się oderwać, co jakiś czas powracam do ich muzyki. Jest to po prostu zespół, którego trzeba przesłuchać, jeżeli jesteś fanem muzyki psychodelicznej i uwielbiasz kapele takie jak The Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle club to na pewno wsiąkniesz w klimat Daylight Frequencies!! Ostatnio na facebooku zespół ogłosił, że będzie nagrywał nowe utwory…zatem nie zostaje nam nic jak czekać!!

Welcome a young band coming from UK! It's about Daylight Frequencies (previous name of the band The Red Mountain Espionage). The first time I had to contact with them was about two months ago. At the very start I played a piece from their EP called 'Six in the Chamber'. I got excited, after the first minute of listening I knew what I could have expected. Dirty, heavy neo-psychedelic rock! Six in the Chamber is definitely my favourite one, there' something about it's trance sound that haunts you , it gets into your brain! Another song that appealed to me was 'Rustic Bones' with it's claustrophobic sound, overwhelming vocal section and dark background keyboard.

You can also find 'Sure fit noose' and 'Lions Den' on the EP, but I won't write about these - check'em out yourself! It's an EP I can't get enough of, I keep coming back to DF's music.

If you're a fan of psychedely and you love bands like The Black Angels, BRMC, then I'm sure you'll love Daylight Frequencies's sound! The band has recently announced on their facebook that they're about to record songs for a new album! So there's nothing to do but wait!

Chief Nowhere

Chief Nowhere, a band from the Los Angeles area of California, west coast of USA, has been together for a few years now, and has released their self-titled first album. Readers of this blog are fans of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, I am sure, and may well know The Committee To Keep Music Evil, Jonestown's collective of artists whom they support and release music for. Chief Nowhere is part of The Committee. The band boasts as one of its members, the brother of the legendary Mr. Rob Campanella, Andy Campanella, along with C.J. Cevallos and Colin Clark (original member Gabriel Cohen has since departed the band). This band created an album that is mostly instrumental, as they explain on their MySpace, and it is a phenomenal piece of modern psychedelia, drawing its influences from classic bands, but shaping its own music as vast, multi-layered sound-scapes capable of blowing your mind in their own right. Technical Difficulties, arguably the highlight of an album with no lows, uses the interplay of growling guitar and wah-wah effects that is just plain mesmerizing. I highly suggest listening with your favorite headphones to get the full effects. The keys and flute used in much of this self-titled first album help to create the psychedelic sphere of excellence, so it is sad to see the note on Chief Nowhere's Myspace page that Gabe Cohen, the member who played those parts, has now left the band. But the band is continuing to work on songs for a next album, good for us! Have a listen to the album's songs, they are all up on the Myspace Player, plus a live track and a demo track, too, and watch the video with Rob playing with his brother's band. Excellent psychedelia, guys, keep it coming!! We love it.

Zdecydowanie radzę odsłuchanie tego albumu z waszymi ulubionymi słuchawkami na uszach dla uzyskania pełnego efektu. Keyboard i flet, które możemy słyszeć przez większość czasu trwania albumu dopełniają wrażenie psychodelicznej doskonałości. Dlatego zasmuciła mnie notka, jaką przeczytałam na stronie Myspace zespołu, informująca o tym, że Gabe Cohen, odpowiedzialny za te sekcje dźwiękowe, opuścił zespół. Kapela kontynuuje jednak prace nad nowymi kawałkami które znajdziemy na następnym albumie. Możecie posłuchać nagrań z wydanego już albumu. Trip Inside This House

Jakiś czas temu Terri podrzuciła mi link do kompilacji Trip Inside This House, Summer Solstice, Vol. III. Idea tworzenia składanek z muzyką psychodeliczną i to jeszcze z muzyką nastawioną na letnią, gorącą, upalną pogodę kojarzącą się z relaksem, odpoczynkiem i zielenią wydała mi się bardzo ciekawym pomysłem. Także długo nie myśląc ściągnąłem z bloga Valisa kompilacje, wypaliłem na płytę, a płytę wrzuciłem szybko do odtwarzacza! W pierwszym momencie zwróciłem uwagę na okładkę, która jest bardzo psychodeliczna! Bardzo mi się spodobała! Zresztą sami zobaczcie!
Natomiast z czym się spotkałem słuchając tej płyty. Summer Solstice vol.III otwiera kapela The Love Explosion ze swoim eksperymentalnym/ambientowym utworem Sunday Morning, przy którym wskazane jest zamknąć oczy, odprężyć się, wziąć kilka głębokich wdechów i przygotować się na kosmiczną podróż. Po wprowadzeniu nas do świata psychodeli stery przejmuje The Early Days ze swoim leniwym, kojącym kawałkiem Shadows of Mit. Whitney v.2 Ucieszyłem się jak na traciliście zobaczyłem zespół Chatham Rise! Miałem okazję wcześniej wsłuchać się w twórczość tej kapeli , idealnie pasuje do tej kompilacji. Po słodkim lenistwie Chatham rise pod osłoną nocy obiera kierunek w nieznane, do miejsca tajemniczego napawającego nas zachwytem i jednocześnie lękiem ze swoim utworem Cloud. 4 utworem Lost is Found , Sky Picnic wyrywa nas z krainy tajemniczości i zabiera do mistycznego , bajecznego świata ( twórczość tego zespołu zawsze kojarzyła mi się właśnie z czymś takim!). Jesteśmy w połowie drogi do naszego celu!! Lyserg Sands ogłasza przerwę utworem Lost In Time! Czas na relaks przy muzyce reggaewo psychodelicznej z elementami hawajskich dźwięków. Wszyscy wypoczęli? Zatem ruszamy dalej! Tym razem naszym pilotem będzie Riding The Riff z Trip Inside The House! Wyjrzyjcie przez okno i podziwiajcie otaczający nas psychodeliczny, kosmos jesteśmy co raz bliżej naszej oazy! Czyżbyśmy byśmy już dotarli? A jeżeli polecieliśmy za daleko?! Nie , wszystko jest pod kontrolą (The Sound of ) Kaleidoscope – Vapor rising mix.2 wie gdzie mamy trafić, mimo tego że zboczyliśmy z kursu. Teraz Helicon, którego zacząłem słuchać tydzień temu i zakochałem się w ich muzyce. Panikujcie wszystko jest ok.! Już jesteśmy ! Możecie wyjść i podziwiać gdzie dotarliśmy! Kraina , w której można zatracić się , uspokoić , uciec od wszystkich problemów i trosk! Tekst Helicon wyjaśnia wszystko, co nas spotyka :

A while ago, Terri sent me a link to the Trip Inside This House, Summer Solstice, Vol. III
compilation.
The idea of creating a psychedelic medley consisting of music destined for hot summer relaxing time seemed like an incredibly interesting idea! So without hesitation I downloaded the free compilation from Valis’s blog, burnt it on a CD and played it on my stereo right away! The first thing that caught my attention was a very psychedelic album cover, I loved it! You can check it out yourself!


Here’s what I came across during the first listen: Summer Solstice vol. III is opened by The Love Explosion with their experimental/ambient piece titled ‘Sunday Morning’. While you listen, I advise you to close your eyes, relax, take a few deep breaths and prepare for a cosmic trip. After that introduction to the world of psychedelia, The Early Days takes over with their lazy, nerves soothing piece called ‘Shadows of Mt. Whitney v.2 ’. It made me very happy to see Chatham Rise on the tracklist! I’ve had the opportunity to listen to this band’s work before, it suits the compilation perfectly. After the lovely laziness, undercover of the night, Chatham Rise takes over leading us into unknown, to a mysterious, heavenly,
and appalling place, all at the same time, with their new piece ‘Clouded’. Number four on the compilation belongs to Sky Picnic with the song called ‘Lost is Found’, which tears us from the mysterious valley and takes us into a mystical, fairy-tale-like world (this band’s music has always made me think of such a place!). We are half way to our destination! Lyserg Sands announces a break with his ‘Lost in Time’! Time to relax with reggae/ psychedelic music with elements of
Hawaiian music style. Everybody’s rested? So let’s move on! This time Riding the Riff of Trip Inside This House will be our pilot! Look out the window and admire the surrounding psychedelic Universe, we are getting close to our oasis! Are we already there? What if we’ve gone too far? No, everything is under control,
(The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope with ‘Vapor rising’ knows our direction, even though we’ve lost our track. Now it’s time for Helicon, I’ve started to listen to a week ago and fell in love with their music. Panic, everything is ok! We’ve reached our destination! You can come out and marvel at the view! We’re in a place where you can lose yourself, soothe your mind, escape all your problems and worries! Helicon lyrics predict all the things awaiting you:

Awesome Psychedelic Doom From Estonia

This is my first post on this blog. But let me first introduce myself. I'm Riez, a Dutch guy who is totally addicted to guitar music (60's Rock, Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Tunes, Garage, Punk, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and so on). Normally I do postings here and here. So far enough about me.

My first post is the awesome album EOS by the great Estonian bass and drum Duo Talbot. These guys plays some great Psychedelic Doom. I saw Talbot in action last april and they did truly impress! EOS is an album with seven tracks and they're all killers. It kicks of with the intro "Threshold" which is followed by the Heavy "Cayenne". Both guys do sing on this album, the bass player does more real singing and the drummer does the grunting parts. In my opinion this is one of the best album of 2010 so far! And Talbot is giving it away for free! Get the album here and enjoy! (On their website you can also download their first EP Tundra).

Album otwiera intro Treshold, które przechodzi w ciężkie Cayenne. Obu członków zespołu śpiewa na tym krążku, basista odpowiada za tradycyjne wokale, a perkusista za growl. Moim zdaniem jest to póki co jedna z najlepszych rzeczy w 2010 roku. Zespół udostępnił tę płytę za darmo, możecie ją ściągnąć stąd! Miłego słuchania! (z oficjalnej strony kapeli możecie pobrać również ich debiutancką Epkę).

Wooden Shjips @Powiekszenie (Warsaw, Poland) - 28.06.10

28 czerwca do Warszawy zawitał zespół, na koncert którego czekałem dobre dwa miesiące. Mowa o pochodzącej z San Francisco kapeli o ciekawej nazwie – Wooden Shjips. Występ odbył się na Nowym Świecie w klubie Powiększenie. Jest to wybór jak najbardziej trafiony, bo samo centrum, bo fajna miejscówka, bo mam blisko (ten ostatni powód jest być może dość egoistyczny, jednak lubię koncerty odbywające się niedaleko od mojego domu ;), aczkolwiek jedna rzecz mogła przeszkadzać, ale o tym w dalszej części.

Do Powiększenia, a właściwie pod Powiększenie dotarliśmy koło godziny 20. Od razu spotkaliśmy ekipę Sunday at Devil Dirt wesoło gaworzącą z basistą Wooden Shjips, nieopodal stała reszta zespołu wraz z panią, która gra na klawiszach w Moon Duo, czyli pobocznym projekcie wokalisty i gitarzysty Wooden Shjips, Erika Ripleya. Chwilę później na scenie pojawił się warszawski zespół Setting the Woods on Fire, pełniący tego dnia rolę supportu. Przy całym naszym uwielbieniu dla Settingów, tego dnia postanowiliśmy jednak odpuścić ich gig, gdyż dość agresywna muzyka prezentowana przez warszawskie trio w żaden sposób nie pasuje do psychodeliczno-transowego Wooden Shjips. W czasie ich koncertu postanowiliśmy zamienić dwa słowa z gwiazami wieczoru oraz „szczelić” sobie pamiątkową fotkę.

Wooden Shjips pojawili się na scenie Powiększenia o 21. Od samego początku zaatakowali dość skromnie zgromadzoną publiczność gęstą, mocno transową psychodelią. Od pierwszych dźwięków nowego, niezatytułowanego jeszcze utworu wiedziałem, że to będzie znakomity koncert. I ani trochę się nie myliłem. Panowie zabrali mnie na godzinną przejażdżkę motocyklem po księżycu. Było bardzo tripowo. Już sama sekcja rytmiczna sprawiała, że zupełnie odpływałem. Grali bardzo prosto (dla zobrazowania – jeden kawałek to mniej więcej cztery dźwięki basu), ale w prostocie siła. Jest to kolejny zespół, który udowadnia starą prawdę, nie trzeba grać miliona dźwięków na sekundę, żeby muzyka była ciekawa. Jeśli do wspomnianej sekcji rytmicznej dołożymy kosmicznie brzmiące klawisze (serio, kosmicznie to najlepsze słowo), typowo shoegaze’ową, jazgoczącą, hałaśliwą gitarę oraz leniwy wokal z olbrzymią ilością pogłosu (Ripley mógł śpiewać nawet po chińsku – i tak nie dało się nic zrozumieć ;) to dostaniemy przepis na koncert idealny!

Panowie zagrali bardzo przekrojowo. Zamieszczona wyżej setlista, spisana przez Ripleya na szybko przed klubem nie pokazuje do końca tego, co publiczność mogła usłyszeć (np. nie zagrali We Ask You to Ride z debiutu, a pojawiło się Vampire Blues z najnowszego dzieła Amerykanów, czyli Vol. 2). Wykonali 9 utworów (+ 1 na bis), wszystkie brzmiące tak jak opisałem wyżej, a więc cudo. Do wyboru kawałków nie można się przyczepić (prywatnie mogę tylko dodać, że zabrakło mi wspomnianego We Ask You to Ride i I Hear the Vibrations. Jednak zdaję sobie sprawę, że to nie był koncert życzeń w nadmorskim kurorcie). W ramach ciekawostki warto dodać, że między utworami słyszeliśmy jakieś ćwierkanie ptaszków puszczone z walkmana(!). Pojawiły się też wizualizacje, ale przez nie najlepiej ustawiony projektor ich istnienie można pominąć.

Teraz trzy rzeczy, do których chciałbym się przyczepić.

1.      Moon Duo – byli tam w komplecie, szkoda, że nie zdecydowano się na zorganizowanie koncertu obu zespołów.

2.      Powiększenie – jeden jedyny problem z tym klubem jest taki, że koncerty muszą się skończyć o 22. Tak było też tym razem. Panowie z Wooden Shjips co jakiś czas zerkali na zegarki, żeby nie przekroczyć ustalonej granicy, a było widać, że chcieli zagrać dłużej. Mogli zacząć ciut wcześniej.

3.      Wizualizacje – brakowało ich jak cholera, tzn. były, ale nie było ich widać tak jak trzeba. Dzięki nim zespół mógłby zabrać publiczność na jeszcze ciekawszą wycieczkę.

Koniec narzekania. Reasumując, mimo drobnych niedociągnięć występ był znakomity. Czyżby koncert roku? Za wcześnie na taką ocenę, ale już teraz mogę powiedzieć, że póki co Wooden Shjips okupują podium!

Ps. Widząc Woodenów na scenie miałem wrażenie, że obcuję z mocno wykręconymi ludźmi. Erik Ripley z długą biało-czarną brodą w japonkach, obsługujący wszystkie pokrętła przy efektach nogami, Omar, perkusista, zabawnie podskakujący na stołku przez cały koncert, Dusty, basista, ruszający się jakby… no właśnie nie wiem do czego to porównać, ale jego sceniczna poza była jedyna w swoim rodzaju. Przy nich, Nash, klawiszowiec wyglądal zupełnie niepozornie... ale grał kosmicznie ;)

On the 28th of June, in Warsaw, took place a concert I’ve waited for over two months.

It’s about the band coming from San Francisco, called Wooden Shjips. The event took place in Nowy Świat Street in Powiększenie Club. A very well-aimed concert location. Downtown, a cool spot, close to my place of residence (the last reason might be a little egoistic, but I really like it when concerts are played near the place I live in ;) ), anyway there was one thing that bothered me, but we’ll get there.

We arrived at Powiększenie about 8 pm. Right away we ran into Sunday at Devil Dirt’s crew talking to the Wooden Shjips’s bassist. Nearby, there was standing the rest of the band along with the lady playing keyboard in Moon Duo, a side project of Wooden Shjips’s  vocalist and guitarist, Erik Ripley. In a while Setting the Woods on Fire, a band coming from Warsaw and supporting WS on that day, appeared on the stage. With all our love for StWoF on that day we decided to intentionally miss their gig, because quite aggressive music played by the Warsaw trio doesn’t fit the trance/psychedelic style of Wooden Shjips. During their performance we decided to chat with the stars of the evening and to ‘shoot’ a keepsake photo. 

Wooden Shjips appeared on the stage of Powiększenie at 9 pm. From the very beginning they attacked the restrained audience with deep,  powerful trance/psychedely. From the very first sound of a new, untitled yet piece, I knew that it’s going to be a concert to remember. And I was right. The gentlemen took me on an hour lasting motorcycle trip to the moon. Just the rhythm itself made me float away completely. They played in a very simple way ( to help you get the idea – moreless four sounds of  the bass made one piece), but there’s power in simplicity! Here’s another band proving an old truth, you don’t have to play a million sounds per second to make music interesting. Adding to the mentioned rhythm section, a keyboard sounding in a cosmic way (seriously the most adequate word), characteristic shoegazy, clattering, noisy guitar and a lazy vocal with a lot of reverb (Ripley could have sung even in Chinese, you couldn’t understand a word ;) ), you get a perfect combination!

The gentleman played pieces of all the albums they’ve released so far. The setlist’s picture above doesn’t exactly show the pieces we could hear during the show ( for instance, they didn’t play ‘We Ask You to Ride’ of their debut LP, but did play ‘Vampire Blues’ of their recent album Vol. 2 instead). Altogether,  they performed 9 fantastic pieces (+1 they played encore). You wished the choice of pieces was a little different (Personally, I missed the mentioned ‘We Ask You to Ride’ and ‘I Hear the Vibrations’). Anyway, I do realize it wasn’t a wish concert.

As an  interesting side note, I can add that during the breaks between separate pieces we could hear birds’ tweet played on a walkman(!). There were also some visualizations, but since the projector’s location wasn’t really thought through, we can as well assume there weren’t any.

There were three things that bothered me:

1.      Moon Duo – even though both the band members were present on that day Moon Duo didn’t support the star of the evening.

2.      Powiększenie – the one and only problem with this club is that concerts always end before 10 pm. And so it did this time. The band members had to check what time is it every once in a while to end the concert before the settled time. And you could actually see that they wanted to play some more. Well, they could have started the show a bit earlier.

3.      Visualisations – I missed the hell out of them, I mean there were some, but weren’t visible. Thanks to them the band could have taken us on an even more interesting trip.

No more complaining. Summing up, the performance was amazing, maybe the best concert of the year? Too soon to tell, but I can say that so far Wooden Shjips has taken the first place!

Ps. Seeing Wooden Shjips on stage I had the impression that I’m having contact with some twisted people…in a good way of course. Erik Ripley with his black & white beard wearing flip-flops, using all the effect buttons. Omar, the drummer, ‘jumping’ on his chair in a funny way. Dusty, the bassist, moving like…well, I can’t really compare it to anything since his stage manner was one of a kind. Nash, the keyboard player looked quite inconspicuous, but played in a cosmic way ;)
