A band that was based in San Fransisco, California, USA, The Otherside was active around the middle of the last decade, releasing one amazing album called Dead Trees, and a very limited edition EP soon after the album, shortly before they split up. The Otherside's song Hey You was featured on volume one of the Psychedelica compilations produced by Northern Star Records, famous in psychedelic music fan circles as a label that compiles great modern psych artists and showcases some of their songs on the series of compilation albums. That song Hey You was such a little modern psych gem, that I had to seek out the entire album Dead Trees, and own it. It took a little while, but I did acquire probably one of the last copies the band was selling as they were splitting up last decade. The album is very special, I think, in that it is at once melodic, beautifully played and sung, catchy as all hell, and quite psychedelic indeed. I would love for the ex band members to know that their music as The Otherside is not forgotten, is still enjoyed, and even sought by some folks. Tak jak zapowiadałem… Epka Rachael ujrzała światło dzienne. Wrzucam ją z lekkim opóźnieniem i chociaż spóźniony to jednak chciałbym opisać swoje wrażenia po przesłuchaniu tego materiału. Na samym początku napiszę, że twórczości Rachael przyglądam się od dłuższego czasu. Pierwszy raz miałem okazję usłyszeć tę grupę podczas ich akustycznego setu i przyznam, że zachwyciłem się tą muzyką. Od tamtej pory prawie regularnie pojawiam się na ich koncertach. Dodam, że nie małą radość sprawia mi to, że mogę obserwować to jak ta muzyka ewoluuje wraz z upływającym czasem. Kapela pochodzi z Polski, a dokładnie z Warszawy i zajmuje się mieszanką psychodelicznych i garażowych brzmień. Po perturbacjach personalnych aktualny skład zespołu tworzą: Szymon Witecki, Michał Kropiński i Dominik Ulicki. Epka Add a Little bit of tabbaco zawiera 4 tracki, które łącznie trwają 15 minut 50 sekund. Po przesłuchaniu tego materiału nasunęła mi się myśl, że są to 4 rockowe żywioły. Add a Little… otwiera utwór Burn slowly and see. Zdecydowanie, mój faworyt - wywołuje skojarzenia z czymś… nieokreślenie ciepłym, gorącym. Bas i gitara zamiast prądu pobierają z gniazdek ogień stały i ogień zmienny. Takie mam wrażenie i wcale nie mam zamiaru chować wyciągniętej w kierunku tego płomienia dłoni. W tym utworze, nawiedzonym zaśpiewom Mike’a, wtóruje mała instrumentalna improwizacja i bębny w klimacie The Black Angels. Drugim utworem jest Grass. Balladowy, relaksujący. Słuchając tego utworu mam nieodpartą chęć, by położyć się gdzieś na ziemi wśród „trawy” i odprężyć się. Jeżeli wiecie o co mi chodzi? Przy You’re like a high muszę nabrać dużo powietrza w płuca i przygotować się na grę uwodzenia… a w rezultacie na dziki seks, który spali wszystkie pochłonięte do tej pory kalorie! Do kompletu żywiołów brakuje jeszcze wody. A w zestawie utworów pozostał już tylko (albo aż) Watchsick, który jako pierwszy zapowiadał następcę I bet you like drugs instead of sex na myspace’owym profilu grupy. I nie będę ukrywał, że utwór ten nie posiada cech typowych dla tego żywiołu. Nie ma tu rozmycia czy rozcieńczenia. Wręcz przeciwnie. To powrót do żywiołu grania - ognistego trzeba dodać. Jeżeli coś w nim przypomina ciecz, to jest gorące i chimeryczne jak wycieki z gejzerów Wyoming.
As I said earlier in another post…The Rachael Ep is finally here, it sees the day light! I’m placing it here with little delay and I wanted to share my thoughts after listening a lot to this recording. To begin, I’ll say that I have been following Rachael for a very long time. I first saw them play an acoustic set and I must admit that I was enchanted by their music. Since that first time, I have been going to Rachael’s concerts regluarly. I have been able to watch this band evolve over time, which has been so much fun. Rachael being a band from Poland , from Warsaw, is very special to me, as they mix my two favourite styles of music: psychedelic with garage sound. After a few changes the band is: Szymon Witecki, Michał Kropiński i Dominik Ulicki. ‘Add a little bit of tobacco’ EP has 4 tracks and it plays for 15 minutes 50 seconds. After listening to these songs, I heard a lot of their harder elements. ‘Add a little’… opens with Burn Slowly and See. This song is definitely my favorite – it calls to mind … undefined warmth, something hot. Bass and guitar instead of taking electricity from a socket, they are taking solid heat and alternating fire. This is my personal impression: I feel my hand pulled in to the direction of the flames. In this track, with haunted singing by Mike, the percussion improvisation and drums is a Black Angels vibe. Second song is Grass: chilling ballad. While listening to this track, I have the desire to lay down on the earth, among “grass”, and relax. Listen to Grass and you might see what I mean. When You’re Like a High plays, I need to breathe very deeply and prepare for a game of seduction…. Perhaps get wild and crazy with someone! To the set of elements, what is missing is water and there’s only the final song Watchsick, which was first announced as the successor of Rachael’s first EP ‘I bet you like drugs intead of sex’ on their Myspace profile. If I’m honest, this song does not have the elemental watery vibes, but instead, returns me to the feeling of heat & a burning, big, FIRE.........but that’s just ME! What do YOU feel when you listen to Rachael??
Na tę epkę czekałem już jakiś czas. Pierwszy ich koncert miałem okazję zobaczyć w klubie Hydrozagadka. Ciężko mi teraz odtworzyć wszystkie nagromadzone wrażenia podczas ich występu, bo od tamtego czasu minął prawie rok. Ale pamiętam, że bardzo zauroczył mnie klimat jaki wtedy udało się zespołowi wytworzyć. Muzyka ta w sam raz wpasowałaby się jako tło do jakiegoś dusznego pomieszczenia, w którym przy barze sączy się piwo i mocniejsze trunki, a wszystko wokół spowija gęsty, papierosowy dym. Do tego jeszcze ten stan lekkiego, melancholijnego uniesienia. I tak dla mnie po Lora Lie słuch trochę zaginął – było to jeszcze wtedy, gdy kapela nie posiadała żadnego nagrania, ani też strony na myspace. Kontakt z jej twórczością był zatem utrudniony. Można było co najwyżej odtworzyć w pamięci nastrój sprzed roku lub poczekać na kolejny set na żywo. Natomiast jeżeli chodzi o bardziej namacalne ślady działalności zespołu to trzeba było uzbroić się w cierpliwość. Wreszcie po blisko roku epka grupy ujrzała światło dzienne. Dodam tylko, że na początku zespół Lora Lie nosił nazwę Parishian Lark… I jest to drugi polski zespół, który z dumą wrzucam na naszego bloga. Nie jest to muzyka ściśle związana z psychodelą, a raczej z noise-rockiem, czasami też noise-popem, ale tak się zauroczyłem ich muzyką, że musieli się pojawić na naszej stronie! Jest to projekt muzyczny Pauliny Sztramskiej, Kai Domińskiej oraz członków zespołu The Spouds: Mateusza Romanoskiego i Tomasza Skórzyńskiego. Epka Rewind została udostępniona 1.5 miesiąca temu na ich facebooku. A ja dodatkowo polecam także sprawdzić stronę grupy na myspace. Koniecznie.

For this EP, I was waiting for quite some time. A while back, I saw Lora Lie's concert in Club Hydrozagadka. It’s hard to describe my feelings while they were playing, because since that time, one year passed. I remember I was charmed by the vibe that band has. The music perfect fits in a stifling room, where at the bar, we're drinking beer and other drinks, and everything is enveloped by tobacco smoke. Through all of that atmosphere, I felt this state of gentle melancholic rapture. After that show, the band dissapeared – it was the time when Lora Lie had no new recordings and no Myspace. Contacting the members was difficult. I could only remember my mood from the concert over a year ago, or wait for another set. However, I just had to be patient. I would receive a sign that Lora Lie was still out there! I might add, that an earlier band name was Parishian Lark… and this was the second Polish band that I’m placing on this blog with pride. This is not kind of music closely related with psychedeliam rather it is noise-rock, sometimes noise-pop, but I so fell in love with their music. This is the music project of Paulina Sztramska, Kaja Domińska and band members of The Spouds: Mateusz Romanoski and Tomasz Skórzyński. Their Rewind EP was available 2.5 months ago on Facebook, finally! And I do recommend to also check the group's page on Myspace, you will love their music!
This is another band who came and went faster than you can say AUSTRALIA ROCKS. Riff Random was based in Melbourne, AU, and were a 6-piece rock band that dwindled in size to 5, then 4 members due to various personal reasons. Active mostly around 2004-2006, their influences were many; you can hear various bands' influences in the songs of Riff Random, not the least of which was beloved, sweet, psych rockers The Morning After Girls. They've got some post-punk in the mix, more psych, and some good old garage rock. Those three styles of rock happen to be my personal trifecta of favorites, so it's no wonder why I adore the only full-length album Riff Random ever released so damn much. Riff Random did release at least one, perhaps two EPs before the full album, but they have proven impossible for me to find, and I did try. I do, however, have their full-length album titled In Space There Is No Sound, and it's wonderful. It's got swagger, it's got attitude, and it rocks. To kolejny zespół, który pojawił się i odszedł szybciej niż moglibyście wymówić Australia rocks. Riff Random pochodziło z Melbourne. Początkowo w skład kapeli wchodziło sześć osób, z czasem zostały tylko cztery. Działali w latach 2004 – 2006. Wpływ na nich miało wiele zespołów, usłyszycie to w ich muzyce. Grali post-punk i psychodelię z domieszką dobrego starego garage rocka. Te 3 style należą do moich ulubionych więc nie ma się co dziwić, że jestem tak oczarowana albumem Riff Random. Zespół wydał jeden longplay i 2 EPki. Do Epek nie udało mi się dotrzeć, ale mam świetny album zatytułowany In Space There Is No Sound. Mam nadzieję, że się wam spodoba!

I can't say much about this band, because there is nothing to find about them, no website, no MySpace or whatever. The only thing about Urania is here. What I can say about this demo is that it is an excellent piece of work. This demo contains eight tracks and they're simply are named I till VIII. These tracks are a display of superb Instrumental Stoner/Space Rock that is performed by Urania. This demo is definitely worth a listen. Urania jest space-stonerowym zespołem z Węgier. Nie mogę o nich zbyt dużo powiedzieć ponieważ ciężko jest znaleźć cokolwiek. Nie mają strony internetowej, MySpace’a ani czegokolwiek w tym stylu. Trzeba przyznać, iż ich demo to kawał świetnej roboty. Zawiera osiem utworów zatytułowanych cyframi od I do VII. Te tracki są świetnymi stonerowo-spacerockowymi instrumentalami. Zdecydowanie zasługują na przesłuchanie. Polecamy!
O tym zespole nie będę się jeszcze rozpisywał. Napiszę tylko że pochodzą z Polski, grają psychodelicznego garage-owego rocka i jestem ich fanem. Zespół Rachael wrzucił wreszcie nowy utwór na myspace-a Burn Slowly and See który możecie potraktować jako przystawkę. Dlaczego jako przystawkę? I will not write too much about this band for now. I will write only that they are from Poland, playing psychedelic garage-rock and I'm fan of theirs. Napisałbym, że to mieszanka dusznego, kabalistycznego grania, ale nie o rejony azji zachodniej tu chodzi. A może właśnie tak, tylko nie do końca jestem tego świadom. Przede mną dosłownie i w przenośni „the cult of dom keller” - eksperyment muzyczny z wielkiej brytanii. Od razu napiszę, że każdy kawałek tego albumu rozpoczyna zabójczy wstęp i nie ukrywam, że to zachęca do zanurzenia się w ten projekt coraz dalej… i dalej. Do tego stopnia, że gdy w winampie po spindrift (słuchałem songs from a ancient age z 2007 roku) rozpoczęły się dźwięki otwierającego płytę intro for the sun, pomyślałem, że muzyka przybrała wreszcie taką formę jakiej czekałem od dłuższego czasu. Zupełnie wyleciało mi z głowy, że tuż po wspomnianym spindrift, chyba bezwarunkowo, dodałem do playlisty „the cult of dom keller”. Już w pierwszym utworze słychać wokalne echolalie - mroczne pozdrowienia wyrzucane bardziej do księżyca niż do słońca (na co wskazywałby tytuł). Wszystko to nieśpieszne, podbijane przez jeden gitarowy akord, zdradzający symptom muzycznego nawiedzenia. W tym miejscu powinienem napisać coś w tym stylu, że im dalej słucham tych dźwięków tym ciekawiej się robi. Po trosze będzie to prawdą, bo każdy kolejny ton jest łapczywie wychwytywany przez moje ucho, chociaż nie zaciera on wrażenia tego co było przed chwilą. Wszystko toczy się niby w podobnym klimacie, choć cały czas jest nieco inaczej. W goat skin dream następuje ciekawa zmiana nastroju, stworzona przez wyizolowany od świata kabaret, którego słucha garstka osób. Wokalista po zażyciu sporej ilości psychodelicji, gdzieś tak od połowy utworu, potrafi już tylko iść po śladach świdrującej gitary. Pod stopami ma piasek i wijące się węże. mam wrażenie, że ta mroczna groteska rozgrywa się w kościele. Albo jest to misterium na przystanku autobusowym w środku kukurydzianego pola. W ogóle płyta ta ma coś z rockowego szabasu. Świetny doomfoot – marszowy, trochę za krótki. Genialne wejście w into the sky volcano, muliste harmonie; jakby przesterowany sitar i na to nałożony brudny dźwięk garażowej gitary. Jakieś tonalne i wokalne wygibasy. A to zaledwie wstęp do ostatniego na płycie beyond burning skies. Po raz drugi mam niewyraźne skojarzenia z pewną surfową kapelą, której nazwa tu nie padnie… po pierwsze dlatego, że to tylko pojedyncze motywy, po drugie „the cult…” ciągnie bardziej w rejony psychodeliczne. Na koniec zostawiłem czwarty w kolejności godshaker. Jest głośniejszy, nieco drapieżniejszy i dłuższy od pozostałych utworów. Przede wszystkim jest pozbawiony partii wokalnych. nic poza bębny, shoegazowe gitary i gdzieniegdzie klawisze (czy dobrze nadstawiam słuch?). Dynamika prowadzi do przyjemnych konwulsji – ten utwór komasuje trans z całej płyty, ukazując najbardziej rockowy pazur zespołu… tak minęło mi blisko 20 min. Z ep 1 tego kwartetu. wszystkie pozytywne wrażenia powyżej. Minusy – długość trwania materiału, aż się prosi, by utwory trwające nieco powyżej minuty (jest ich trzy) zostały rozwinięte jako pełnowymiarowe kompozycje. Jeżeli czegoś im brakuje, to właśnie odpowiedniej do podtrzymania nastroju długości. _____________________________________________________________
Here’s in front of me, literally and figuratively “Cult of Dom Keller” – experimental music from this new band from Great Britain. I get a feeling from much of this music, a feeling of Asiatic influences throughout the EP’s songs. First of all, I will write that each track of this EP has a killer opening and I will not hide, it makes me want to dip in this project deeper…and deeper, to a great extent. After I played Spindrift in my Winamp player (I was listening to their songs released way back in 2007!), the sounds of first track on the EP are “Intro for the Sun”. I thought, now, THIS is music I have been waiting for, for a long time! I had completely forgotten that I added to my playlist “Cult of Dom Keller”, so I was surprised at the amazing difference in sounds from Spindrift’s sound. In the first song you can hear vocal echoes – dark greetings thrown more to the moon than to the sun (as the title hints). Everything is deliberately boosted by one guitar, a sound that gets bigger and bigger on that guitar. At this point, the song gets even more interesting. My ears are completely enthralled. All the sounds I hear are similar, yet I can detect differences that make the songs intriguing. Goat Skin Dream is followed by an interesting change of atmosphere, so different from what the masses are used to listening to. This music is special: it’s different, tribal, intriguing. The vocalist sounds like he’s taking some incredible trip on psychedelics. Under his feet he’s got sand and writhing snakes. The guitar sounds make me think I’m in the trip with him! I see visions, and I have feelings from The Cult of Dom Keller’s music, that this dark, grotesque trip took place in a church or at some mysterious bus station in the middle of a cornfield! I love this trip! This EP has a bit of harder rock, too, like what Black Sabbath might play. Doomfoot has a marching rock beat, but ends too quickly. Into the Sky erupts like a volcano, then uses muddy harmonics, something like a sitar in overdrive paired with the dirty sound of garage guitar. Beyond Burning Skies is a huge psychedelic trip towards the end of the EP. Godshaker, is louder, grasping a hold of me, and longer than the other songs. No vocals, just tribal drums, shoegaze guitars, and some keyboards accents, I think, if I hear correctly! This track connects all the other songs, and keeps the trance going, and I am surprised the 20 minutes of the EP are over! All positive impressions I get from this music is above. Weaknesses: the length of the songs could be longer, with their grand psychedelic aspirations. Maybe the band can further develop their short songs as a full-size compositions for an album. If anything is missing, it is just right length of the songs to keep up the mood.
